Amon (The Hidden)

Husband of Mut and father of the god Khonsu in the Theban triad, Amon is a god almost unknown in remote periods of the history of Pharaonic Egypt; it will take an increasingly preponderant place as the princes of Thebes will gain power. It was from the 11th dynasty that it took on a national dimension and that it eventually established itself as the god of the gods. the rise to power of the Ammenhemat will be decisive for the role played by Amon, the king of the gods, the real Egyptian Jupiter. Amon is associated with a large number of legends. Under the name of Amon-Ra, he was identified with the solar god. In the form of a goose (one of his symbolic animals), he laid the primordial egg from which life emerged. Finally, in the form of a snake, he fertilized the cosmic egg shaped by the deities of the Ogdoad of Hermopolis in Primordial Waters.

He was represented in the form of a man wearing a tall crown wearing two tall vertical feathers. It is often found with the skin painted blue. It is the color of lapis lazuli, a sacred stone in the eyes of the ancient Egyptians. It is also represented brown skin, more rarely, and black skin, hence its assimilation to the god of Coptos Min. It is also found represented in the form of a ram or a goose. He is sometimes associated with the god Min under the name Amon-Min. Around the 4th century BC, Amon was identified with Zeus and made oracles. It was also, with Apollo Delphi, one of the main oracles of the ancient world.

Among its main sanctuaries, we can cite: Karnak, the largest religious building ever built, located in Thebes, its holy city; the oasis of Siwa where oracles were rendered, this is also where Alexander made himself the son of Ammon-Zeus.
